Importance of Water
Water is so important for our environment, but for us to live as well. This page tells the story of how appreciative we all should be about water in many different regions/areas of our world.
Weekly Activity for 04/12 – 04/16: The SenseME team challenges all young children and their caregivers/families to spend 1-2 afternoons outside this week to find 3-4 areas where water could puddle around their home. This can include:
- Driveway Dips
- Low Areas on Lawns
- Wishing Wells
- Buckets
Once you have your 3-4 areas selected, please write a short paragraph on a piece of paper or your journal, to talk about your findings.
Weekly Activity for 03/29 – 04/02: The SenseME team challenges all young children and their caregivers/families to travel around their particular region to explore smaller bodies of water. Not any area of water, but smaller areas such as ponds, streams, and lakes. These bodies of water can include:
• Local Lakes
• Local Ponds
• Local Streams
• Swampy Areas
After you visit one of those sites, you should document your findings including what you saw for animals in the water, what you saw for natural debris in the water (sticks, leaves, etc). Write about your findings and share them with us using the hashtag #SenseMe.
Weekly Activity for 03/22 – 03/26: The SenseME team challenges all young children and their caregivers/families to get out and explore areas of water around their neighborhood, or to travel around their region/state to check out the bodies of water. We’ve had such a nice pattern here in the State of Maine, so get out there and explore before we go back to the reality of Spring here in Maine. This can include:
• The Coast
• Local River
• Local Lake
• Local Pond
• Swampy Areas
Once you have gone to your area, bring a notebook or journal, and write a sentence or two about what your experience was like. For example, if you went to the coast, you can explain the difference in wind or waves moving.
Weekly Activity (03/08 – 03/12): The SenseME team challenges all young children and their caregivers/families to explore smaller water-related objects within their home. This can include:
• Ice Cubes/Ice Blocks
• Water-Related Objects
• Water Boiling on Oven Burner (with Adult Supervision)
• Condensation of Water
When completed, reflect and see if there is a photo that matches 1-2 of the activities that you did.
All children and families/caregivers participating in the weekly activity should spread the word about the challenge and encourage other peers to get involved in the challenge as well.
Weekly Activity (03-01 / 03-05): The SenseME team challenges all young children (and their caregivers/parents) to explore a small body of water right in your neighborhood. This could consist of:
• A Pond or Stream
• A Lake
• A River
• Ocean-Front/Beach
When completed, see if you can find a photo above that matches closely to the location that you chose.
All children and families/caregivers participating in the weekly activity should spread the word about the challenge and encourage other peers to get involved in the challenge as well.
